Chapter 34: The Place That Calls Her Doctor

'Doctor Sera, check this before I give it to my son,' the woman said, passing me a fever mixture while Kael stood beside the counter.

Dov had the ledger open in front of her. Kael was close enough to answer for the pack, if anyone had asked him. The woman waited for me.

I checked the label and read the dose. 'Give it with food. If he gets drowsy again, stop and bring me the bottle.'

'You corrected the measure last time,' she said. 'I trust your judgment.'

She turned away with the mixture. Around us, the market regulars kept listening. Kael stayed at the counter, and nobody asked whether the council approved of my title.

The room had its own verdict. It had taken the pack's rejection and put it aside without ceremony.

Dov passed me a remedy measure. 'Check this before I give it to Mrs. Bell.'

The spoon held too much tincture. I tipped the excess back into the bottle, wiped the rim, and set the measure beside the paper packet.

'You were testing me,' I said.

'I was saving Mrs. Bell from my arithmetic,' Dov said. 'It has a poor record.'

Mrs. Bell checked the label before tucking the packet into her market bag. She had come for the same joint salve twice this month and trusted the dose more than the handwriting.

'Is this enough for the whole week?' she asked me.
