Chapter 35: The Cord Kept for Her
The red cord lay across Dov's palm, and my fingers pressed hard into the edge of the worktable before I could stop them.
She had taken it from the back of her locked cabinet. Kael stood beside the table while the council request sat face down beneath my other hand. Its fresh seal showed above my fingers.
'You can read the request later,' Dov said. 'This cannot wait.'
She opened the small cloth pouch. The cord had been handled until its dark fibers softened. Each end held a tight knot.
I knew it.
The birth room came back in pieces: linen under my cheek, a newborn lifted from my sight, a woman's hands tying red cord around a tiny wrist. My children. My throat tightened. I kept my palm on the paper until the table stopped shifting under my touch.
Dov had told us she carried the living child out of that room. She had called the cord a keepsake from a difficult birth. Now it rested between us, and that account could not hold its shape.
Kael looked from the cord to Dov. He did not reach for it, and he left the request untouched.
