Chapter 17: Odile's Offer
The diary pressed against my ribs under my jacket.
I didn't touch it.
"I don't do business in the road, Mademoiselle," I said. "If you want to buy something from me, come up on my gallery."
I swung down off Sable and handed the rein to Laurent.
Then I walked through my own gate and up my own steps and didn't look back to see if she'd follow.
She followed.
She sat down in Papa's rocker without being asked.
She set the prayer book on her knee and folded her gloves on top of it.
I stayed standing.
Laurent tied the horses and came up the steps and stood at the end of the gallery with his arms folded.
She didn't give him a glance.
"Five thousand dollars," she said. "That's a thousand more than your father ever owed me. For a box of old letters and ledgers that are of no use to anybody."
"Then why do you want them?"
"Your father and my brother were friends for thirty years. Men write foolish things about their friends' families." She smoothed her glove. "I'd rather they went in my stove than into the parish's mouths."
