Chapter 22: The Page
The road was very quiet.
The page was a column of names in the old priest's hand, one baptism to a line, the ink gone brown with age.
The tenth line down was the one.
"March 10th. Devereux, twin sons of Devereux and his late wife. Armand, the elder. Godfather, Lacombe. Laurent, the younger."
And in the margin beside it, smaller, squeezed in sideways, the way the priest had told us he always did:
"The elder bears a brown mark on the left shoulder."
I read it out loud.
Aurore put her hand over her mouth.
Laurent didn't say anything.
He sat Gambit in the middle of the bayou road with his sling stained red and looked at the page in my hands.
"She kept it," he said at last. "Twenty-eight years. She could have burned it in any stove in the house."
"She kept my ribbon too," I said.
"She keeps everything," Aurore said. "I told you."
We rode home.
I put the page and the diary side by side on our kitchen table and the three of us just looked at them while the coffee boiled over.
