Chapter 25: The Teche Cup

The starter raised his red flag.

Eleven horses jostled at the rope.

Somebody's bay kicked out behind, and a man swore.

Brimstone stood two horses over from me, sweating dark along his neck already, and Armand sat him with his hands too high.

He looked at me once.

"Last chance, Varina," he said. "Pull up at the mile and walk her home."

I didn't answer.

I looked down the course to the river turn.

Laurent stood at the rail there, alone, his sling a white mark against the moss.

He'd walked the half mile from the start to keep his promise.

The flag dropped.

Sable was gone before I asked her.

The first furlong was all elbows and mud and other men's knees.

A clod hit me in the cheek.

A rider on a gray shouted, "Get out of the way, girl!" and then I was past him and couldn't hear him anymore.

I kept my hands low.

I let my legs do the work.

Sable settled into her long, flat stride on the inside, by the bayou, the way she'd run a hundred mornings on old Madame's headland.
