Chapter 19: My Parents

My parents came to the cabin the next morning in the mill cart.

I watched them from the porch with a cup of Elias's black tea in my hands.

My father drove, and my mother sat beside him in her good church shawl.

In the back of the cart were six sacks of flour, a basket and a cake under a cloth.

Elias stood at the corner of the cabin with his arms crossed, and he did not come forward.

My mother climbed down before the cart had stopped.

"Mara," she cried. "My girl. My brave girl."

She opened her arms.

I did not step into them.

"What are you doing here, Mother?" I said.

Her arms came down slowly.

"We came to see you. We have heard everything. The King's own sleigh took you to the Court, and all the valley says he gave you a seat at his table."

"He did not."

"They say you are his favorite," she said, and her eyes went bright. "My daughter, the King's favorite!"

I set the cup down on the rail.

"Is that why you brought a cake?"

My father got down from the cart, heavily, and stood with his hat in both hands.

"Mara," he said. "Your mother has been crying for two days."

"I'm sure she has."

"We have been very foolish."

"Foolish," I said.

My mother pressed on quickly.

"We made a mistake with the Holt arrangement, that is all. We thought it was best for you. Everyone in a bonding does what they think is best."

"You gave me away for a grain contract."

"We gave you a home!"

"I had a locked wing and a door nobody ever opened. You knew. I wrote to you in the second year, Mother, and you wrote back that a Luna does not complain."

She took a step back.
