Chapter 18: Visiting Hours
Jonas had sat in a lot of waiting rooms, and he hated this one more than all of them.
It was the ICU family lounge at Phoebe, two vinyl couches and a window onto an air shaft, and a vending machine that hummed.
Rudy slept sitting up on the far couch with his chin on his chest.
It was three in the morning on Monday.
Cooper lay behind a glass wall twenty feet away, flat in a white bed.
A ventilator mask covered his face, and a dozen bags of fluid hung on poles around him.
Jonas had been watching the numbers on the monitor for six hours.
He did not understand most of them.
He understood the green line, which jumped and slid and jumped again, and the red number under it that kept dropping.
At four the doctor came out.
She was a heavy-eyed woman in her fifties with a gray braid, and she sat down across from him and did not waste time.
"The infection is in the valve and it's not clearing," she said. "The antibiotics are working, but slowly, and his heart is struggling with the fluid. Dialysis alone isn't going to hold him. He needs a transplant, and soon."
