Chapter 6: The Flint
"Sunday," Cooper had said last night, in the dark hallway outside the guest room, and Jonas had nodded once and gone down the stairs without another word.
It was Sunday now.
Cooper sat on a muddy bank of the Flint River with a rod in his hand and his best friend beside him.
"You look nervous," Rudy said.
"I'm fishing."
"You're holding that rod like it's going to bite you."
"It's the first Sunday I've had in a year that I wasn't sick," Cooper said. "I'm enjoying it."
That was almost true.
The river ran brown and slow past a stand of cypress, and the October sun lay on the water.
Somewhere downstream a heron stood in the shallows, pretending not to see them.
They had fished this bank every other weekend since they were eleven.
Rudy had a thermos of terrible coffee and a bag of boiled peanuts.
Cooper had known his face so long that he could read it without looking.
He was working up to something.
"I'll say this once," Rudy said finally.
"Okay."
"I know about the sixty days. I've known since before you did, because I read your chart in the truck and I'm a very bad person."
"Rudy," Cooper said.
"And I know about Brannen. Everyone on the shift knows about Brannen. They've got a pool going on how long you last."
"That's disgusting."
"I put twenty on forever." Rudy reeled in a few inches of line and let it go again. "Cooper. I'm in love with you."
The heron lifted off the water.
Cooper watched it go, a gray shape against the cypress, and found that his mouth had opened and nothing was coming out.
