Chapter 11: The Rejection

The director's office smelled of old coffee and printer toner.

He sat behind the desk and put a thin folder in front of me.

"Read the top sheet," he said.

It was an email, printed out, and dated the first week of May.

It was from the director to a man named Ames.

Dear Mr. Ames, I am grateful for your generous offer, but I cannot create a seat for your son. Both places this year are taken. One is held for a student from your son's own school, Elliot Koster, who is the best young forecaster I have seen in twenty years. I have written to him twice and I will write a third time.

At the bottom, someone had added a line in blue ink.

Copied to F. Ames, at his request.

I read it again.

"Felix asked to be copied," I said.

"His father told me the boy wanted to understand the decision." The director took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. "I thought it was a good sign, a boy who wanted to learn."

"When did he get this?"

"The sixth of May."

I worked backward.

The dare had been played on the last night of exams, on the fifteenth of June.

It was five weeks after the email.

"Before that, in March," the director said, "the father had already asked once. He offered the center a new wing."

"And the answer was no."

"The answer was that the wing was welcome and the seat was not for sale."
