Chapter 12: Two Strides

That evening, the front desk called the lab.

"I have a young woman on the line who won't give up," the guard said. "She says her name is Ingrid. She says she's not calling to ask for anything."

My lab partner looked up from her screen.

"Do you want it?"

I stood there with a coffee going cold in my hand.

My notice had said not to contact me.

The director, who was reading over my shoulder, answered without being asked.

"You can take it in my office," he said. "I'll sit in."

I picked up the receiver on his desk.

"Ingrid."

"Elliot."

Her voice was thin, and I had never heard it that way.

Ingrid was the calm one.

She was the one who read the instructions and found the mistake.

"I'm sorry," she said. "I know your notice said not to. I know I'm the last person you want to hear from."

"Say what you called to say."

"Felix texted all of us an hour ago. He said he'd gone to the center with his father, and you cornered him in a stairwell and shouted at him. He said he fainted in the car and he's at a hospital."

"Is that what he said?"

"Yes."

"I didn't shout."

"I believe you."

The words came out so quickly that I was silent.

"Maxine is booking a flight," Ingrid said. "Daphne is crying in the kitchen. Bridget wants to call the police again. I asked what hospital, and nobody knew. I asked Felix, and he said his father didn't want visitors."
