Chapter 15: The Boardroom

The boardroom had a long glass table, and Felix's side of it was full.

His father sat at the center in a gray suit.

The attorney sat on his right with a leather folder.

Felix sat on his left in a pale blue sweater, one hand pressed flat against his chest.

The director took the head of the table, and I sat at the far end with a laptop and my lab partner beside me.

She had insisted on coming.

"If they throw you out, they throw out the one who fixed the model," she had said. "So I'm a witness."

The attorney opened his folder.

"Thank you for seeing us. My client's son suffered a medical emergency after being cornered in your stairwell by this student. We are asking for a written retraction of the center's statements, Mr. Koster's dismissal, and a full account of the recording."

Felix coughed, softly.

His father put a hand on his shoulder.

"Easy, son."

"I'm sorry, Dad. I don't want any trouble for Elliot. I just can't stop shaking."

The director folded his hands.

"Mr. Koster, the floor is yours."

I opened the laptop and turned it so the speaker faced the table.

"This is the recording from the east stairwell, from the morning of the tour," I said. "The director has agreed to let it be played here."

The attorney leaned forward.

"We object to any unauthorized..."

"It's the center's own recording," the director said. "Of the center's own secured area. Press the key, Mr. Koster."

I pressed it.

The speaker crackled, and then Felix's voice filled the room.

"My heart's fine."

His father turned his head.
