Chapter 16: Two Sides

Maxine and Bridget called the front desk the next afternoon.

They called together, on one speaker, and they would not hang up until the guard put the call through to me.

The director said yes, and sat down beside me.

"Elliot." Maxine's voice came out raw. "What did you do to him?"

"Hello to you too."

"Felix called me from the airport. He was crying so hard I couldn't understand him. He says you played his father a fake tape and his father's sending him away to a school in another country."

"It isn't fake."

"He says you put words in his mouth."

"I didn't. Do you want to hear it?"

"No," Bridget said, fast.

"It's four minutes. You can hear his voice."

"You edit videos for a living, Elliot," Bridget said. "You've done it since you were fourteen. You made a clip of Maxine saying she'd marry the mascot, and it took you an afternoon."

"That was a joke, and you all laughed."

"So you can make anyone say anything."

I looked at the director.

He lifted one eyebrow and said nothing.

"Maxine," I said. "Is that what you think? That I built a recording to hurt a boy with a heart condition?"

"I think you were hurt. I think you're angry. I get it. But you ruined him."

"Which hospital does he go to?"

"What does that have to do with anything?"

"Ingrid asked, and nobody could tell her. You've known him five months. Do you know the name of one doctor?"

Maxine went quiet.

"That's not the point," Bridget said.

"It's the only point."

"The point is that he trusted us, and you're picking at him when he's already down." Her voice rose. "I brought him into this group, Elliot. Me. I'm the one who has to look at his face."
