Chapter 4: The Toll Gate
Two hours later, a black car stopped outside my house.
My parents were still working overseas, so they said goodbye over a video call.
My father was crying.
"Are you sure you don't want us to fly home?"
"The center doesn't allow family inside," I said.
My mother pressed her lips together to keep from crying too.
"Look after yourself. If anyone there bullies you, tell your professor. Don't swallow it, Elliot."
My eyes burned.
At least somebody was sad that I was going.
Daphne and the others were at Felix's house, hanging balloons for the party they were having to celebrate their North offers.
My phone kept lighting up with messages from the group chat.
Bridget posted a picture of a wall covered in balloons.
[Elliot, you're the best at decorating. Come help!]
[He's still sulking. Leave him alone,] Ingrid wrote.
Maxine sent a picture of the five of them around a cake.
[Give him a few months in West City. He'll realize we were right. We'll livestream our Thanksgiving dinner for him so he can watch what he missed.]
I didn't answer any of it.
The driver put my suitcase in the trunk.
"Mr. Koster, once you get in, the project's confidentiality rules begin," he said. "You'll hand over your phone and your accounts. Is there anyone you need to contact first?"
"No."
I got in.
The phone lit up again.
Felix had changed the group's name from Five Best Friends to Five North University Students.
