Chapter 5: Nobody by That Name

I stood at the desk with my suitcase.

"Please keep saying that," I said.

"We will," the woman said, "for as long as you want us to."

She slid a visitor log across the counter, and I signed it.

The director was waiting at the end of the hall.

I knew him from his emails, and from his one photo in a conference program.

He was a lean man in a gray sweater, and he shook my hand warmly.

"Elliot Koster. You said no to me twice."

"Yes, sir."

"I'm glad you finally said yes."

I wanted to tell him it wasn't that simple.

He didn't ask, and I didn't say.

He walked me through a door that needed two badges and a thumbprint.

Behind it was a round room with one wall made of screens.

Every screen showed the same thing from a different angle: a storm over the ocean, wrapped around its own eye.

I stopped walking.

I had dreamed about this room since I was nine.

The willow on our street had lost its biggest branch in a storm nobody saw coming, and I had decided then that I would be the one who saw the next one.

"That's the live model," the director said. "We're running it three days ahead of the weather service. The last two times, we were right and they were wrong. This is Tuesday's storm."

A girl a little older than me looked up from a desk covered in coffee cups.
