Chapter 6: Missing Person

On my ninth day at the center, a police officer was waiting in the director's office.

She was sitting very straight with a folder on her knees.

The director stood by the window and didn't speak.

"Mr. Koster, thanks for coming," the officer said. "I'm here about a missing person report out of North City. It names you."

I sat down.

"A report from who?"

"Five people signed statements." She opened the folder. "They say you left home in a car with no explanation, that you were upset and said you'd disappear, and that they believe you may have been taken somewhere against your will."

She looked up.

"Two of them also say you had been unstable for weeks."

I laughed.

I couldn't help it.

The officer didn't smile, but she didn't stop me either.

"Which two?" I asked.

She turned a page.

"A Maxine Kline and a Bridget Slingsby. A Daphne Lowry says you were her boyfriend and that she is afraid for your safety. An Ingrid Hedman says you took her camera bag."

"She took my camera bag."

The officer wrote something down.

"Is there a fifth?"

"Felix Ames," she said. "He's the one who filed it."

My chest went tight, and then it settled.
