Chapter 10: No Questions

I looked at the top of the message again.

Under the doctor's name there was a small gray line.

Received: Tuesday, 14:12.

It was Thursday night.

"Two days," I said.

Jakub had not moved from the doorway.

"Yes."

"You sat on this for two days."

"I wanted you to be strong first."

"Strong."

The word came out of me very quietly.

"You carried this in your pocket while I made dumplings. You watched me laugh. You let me walk into that square and look at her, and all that time you knew what she'd done to me."

"I knew what the pills were. I did not know who. I did not know it was her."

"You knew I'd been poisoned, Jakub."

"I did not want to break you."

"I was already broken. I came here broken."

He went white.

I should have stopped there.

I did not stop.

"A man decided what I could handle once already," I said. "He decided what pills I took, and what I was told, and what my body was for. Do you know how that feels, to find out the person who was being so gentle with you has been choosing for you the whole time?"

He flinched.

"I am not him."

"No. He never kept anything from me for my own good. He just did it."

The room was very still.

"Say it," I told him. "Say what you want to say."

He took a long breath.

"I want to ask you one thing," he said. "I have not asked in two weeks. One question."

"You said no questions."

"I know what I said."

"That was your rule, Jakub. Your own rule. You made it, and I kept it."

"I made it because I..."

"Then keep it."

I watched it land.

"Is the father the man who held you down?" he said. "Yes or no. Only that."

"No questions."

"Freya."
