Chapter 23: What He Signs Away
Brecken sat on Hana's front step with snow on his hair and his hands hanging between his knees.
He still wore the navy tuxedo from the night before, and a paper bracelet from the police station on his wrist.
His chief sat in the sedan across the street with the engine off.
I stood in the doorway in Jakub's sweater, and Jakub stood a step behind me.
Hana was behind him with the wooden spoon.
"They let me out at five," Brecken said, without looking up. "I surrender my passport on Monday. A Chicago prosecutor flies in to meet me. I'll plead to all of it."
"All of it?"
"The table. The four men. The assault. I won't blame the pills or Bethany. I did the first thing, and I'm doing the time."
"How long?"
"My lawyers say six years. I say they're guessing."
I came down one step.
"Why are you here?"
"I have no right to ask for anything," he said. "You told me so in this kitchen."
"I did."
"I am going to ask for one thing anyway. You can say no."
"I will."
"I know."
He lifted his face.
It was gray, and unshaven, and ten years older than it had been in the salon.
"Let me be in her life," Brecken said. "Not as your husband. Not near you. A letter a year. A photograph. A line in the file that says her father existed."
"No."
He nodded slowly.
"Freya..."
"I'm not saying it to hurt you. I'm saying it because it's true. You said get rid of it about her, and you meant it. I won't have her learn who her father is from you."
