Chapter 22: The Show

"What condition?" said Finlay.

Alasdair didn't answer him.

He turned to me.

"The bothy's not in it," he said. "The bothy and the burn ground, from the pines down to the water. That goes to Ailsa. In her own name, on its own paper."

I stared at him.

"Whatever happens between you and my son," he said. "Whether you're married in a year or never speak again. It's yours."

"I don't want paying, Alasdair."

"It's not pay." His big face was very red. "You were put in the box room in this house like a spare lamp. You were called a guest. I let that happen at my own table." He held the envelope out again, to Finlay this time. "So she's never anybody's guest in this glen again. That's the condition. Take it or don't."

Finlay looked at me.

He didn't take it.

He didn't say a word.

He waited, the way he'd learned to.

"I've a show in two weeks," I said. "I'll answer after."

"Then so will I," said Finlay.

Alasdair looked from one of us to the other.

Then he laughed until he had to hold the banister, and Elspeth said, "Well, that's settled, then," and asked for her breakfast.
