Chapter 23: Spring
On the ninth of March the snow had gone off the low ground, and the burn was loud with it.
Finlay drove me down the glen track at ten in the morning with his "something" in a paper bag on the dashboard.
He wouldn't let me look in it.
The shack was the same squat black shape it had always been, with the hill behind it going up green and brown into sun.
Primroses had come out along the bank of the burn.
I'd never seen it without snow.
"Go on," said Finlay.
I got out of the Land Rover.
The nail under the eaves was empty.
The latch stuck when I put my hand on it.
I put my shoulder to it, and it gave, and I stood in the doorway with the March light coming in past me.
The stove. The log basket. The shelf with the dusty whisky on it, still sealed.
The iron cot was bare.
No horsehair mattress.
Just the iron frame, and the springs, and the grey wool army blanket folded square on the springs.
I turned round.
Finlay was leaning on the Land Rover with his arms folded.
