Chapter 15: The Terms Again
Vannina's POV
The notary read me the release twice, and I did not sign it.
I walked home through the rain with the folder under my arm and my boots full of water.
Antone was waiting in the top room.
He sat on the edge of the cot with his hands between his knees, in yesterday's shirt, and he stood when I came in.
I put the folder down on my workbench, hard enough to rattle the brushes.
"You went behind my back," I said.
"I went to the notary."
"That is behind my back."
"Yes," he said. "It is."
"You signed away fourteen hundred jobs and your father's name, and you did not ask me one question first."
"You are free," Antone said. "You keep the company. You keep the atelier. Nobody will ever call you a price again."
"You are letting me go like a debt," I said. "Written off, with a signature, because it makes you feel clean."
His jaw moved.
"That is not what this is," he said.
"Then say what it is," I said.
"I put it on your father, Vannina. For eleven years I put it on him, and I put it on you for eight weeks."
His voice was low, and it was rough.
"I held a ring out to you on my hand and told you he drowned my brother. I do not know how to stand in front of you."
"You stood in front of me on Christmas Eve and shouted," I said. "At my people. In your house."
He went still.
"Rule three," I said. "You raised your voice to me in front of my people. You said you never would."
"I know what I said."
"Count it."
"Counted," Antone said.
"Good. Now sit down and listen, because I'm only going to say my terms once."
