Chapter 11: Going Down

I picked the strip of wool off my windshield with two fingers.

It was clean. No stain on it.

Behind me, boots crunched on the asphalt.

Matvei came across the lot with three of his men behind him.

The one with the fire hydrant neck was cracking his knuckles one at a time.

Matvei looked at the tires. Then at the wool in my hand.

His face didn't change at all.

He said something in Russian, very softly.

The men split up without a word. The big one stayed beside Matvei and took something out of his coat that caught the light.

"What did you tell them?" I asked.

"To find Mr. Truscott."

"And then what?"

Matvei looked down at me.

"And then he'll understand that he doesn't touch what's yours." His voice was mild, like he was telling me the weather. "He'll keep both his hands. He won't use them for a while."

For one second I wanted it.

I wanted Kent on his knees on this asphalt. I wanted him to know what it was like to flinch before anyone moved.

Then I thought about the cellar, and Lindsey's voice, and all the years somebody bigger decided what happened to a body.

"No," I said. "Call them back."

"Halle. He slashed your tires in front of my men. If I let that stand on this waterfront..."

"Then let it stand." I stepped in close and made him look at me. "You don't get to be my weapon. I didn't walk out of that house to start a new one where men break each other for me."

He didn't answer.

"If Kent goes down, he goes down in front of everyone, with a judge, with my can on the table," I said. "Not in an alley. Call them back."

He looked at me for a long moment. Then he barked an order in Russian, loud enough to carry.

His men came back.
