Chapter 24: Three in the Morning
"On the crane," I said. "Say it again."
Lindsey wiped her face with the back of her wrist and smeared it worse.
"He went down to the terminal that night with Kent. He said an old man needed a lesson in manners." She swallowed. "He came home at half past two. Through the garage. In his socks."
"Holding his shoes," I said.
She stared at me.
"I was at the sink," I said. "With Kent's coat. I heard the garage door at half past two. I thought it was the wind."
"There was something on the shoes. He told me it was rust." Her voice went thin. "In the morning he made me take them to the club and put them in the trash behind the tennis courts."
"Did he say anything?"
"He poured a drink. He said, 'Kent handled it. I watched him handle it.'"
Down in the cellar, Kent had gone silent.
Headlights swept across the foyer windows.
Matvei came through the front door first.
He'd driven himself. His coat was open, and he was breathing.
