Chapter 25: His Choice
I turned the phone around so Matvei could read it.
He read it twice. His face didn't move.
"He's not stupid," he said. "He's been to see the uncle."
"How do you know?"
"Because Parker has nothing on me. The uncle has two of my old crews who'll swear to anything."
The detective came to my garage at noon and sat on an upturned bucket with her raincoat dripping.
"Lindsey took it back," she said.
"She came in this morning with Parker's lawyer at her elbow. She says she was drunk. She says she was frightened of the Russian in her foyer. She says you coached her."
"I crouched on a wet floor and listened."
"I know what you did." She rubbed her eyes. "But on paper I've got a voicemail with no second name, a coat that puts Kent at the foot of a ladder, and a ledger with a letter P in it."
"And Kent?"
"Kent's in a cell on the assault and the kidnapping, and he isn't saying a word."
"And Parker?"
"Home in Milton. Untouched." She stood up. "He walked into the station yesterday and asked if anybody was looking for him."
