Chapter 29: Her Terminal
Parker turned toward the back wall.
He'd done that at dinner parties for twenty years. It used to work.
The man with the fire hydrant neck cupped his hands around his mouth.
"She climbed crane two, Atwater," he called. "You never climbed anything but your daddy's stairs."
The laughter came back twice as loud.
Parker's face went from white to red to something with no color at all.
The detective took his elbow and walked him up the aisle and out the double doors.
He didn't look back at me. I didn't need him to.
I put the lid back on my coffee can.
My first morning at the terminal, I was at the gate at five-thirty.
It was still dark. The three blue cranes stood over the berths with their red lights blinking.
The sign over the gate still said ATWATER MARINE with the second T missing.
I'd brought a stepladder and a can of paint from my landlord's store.
By the time the morning shift came through the gate, the T was back. A little crooked. My own hand.
They stopped and looked up at it.
