Chapter 11: Two Days Early
He did not knock.
He rang the bell once, politely, like a man selling something, and Declan opened the door himself in yesterday's sweater with his hair on end.
I stood on the stairs with the blanket around me and watched through the banister.
"Mr. Mallory," the man in the gray overcoat said. "I'm sorry for the hour. I'm early."
"You're welcome," Declan said. "Come in."
"I won't stay long. I've driven a long way and I'd like some coffee."
He came into the hall and took off his hat.
He was sixty or so, tall and spare, with a long gentle face and gray hair cut short, and he looked like a man who taught high-school Latin.

"And you must be the young lady," he said.
I did not say anything.
"I do apologize. I'd not meant to find anyone." He turned back to Declan. "Is there a kitchen?"
There was a kitchen.
The three of us stood in it while Declan made coffee, because the stove had gas and the lights were still out.
