Chapter 13: Wedding Bells
At one in the morning I was still in my dress, sitting on the yellow bedspread, holding the one-eyed rabbit.
The house had gone quiet after a funeral.
I could hear my mother crying through two walls, and Linus's low voice answering her.
I put the rabbit down and opened my door.
Cullen was in the hall.
He stood against the wall with his bloody collar and his split lip.
He looked like a man who had been told to stay and had taken it literally.
"You said not tonight," he said. "So I didn't leave."
"I know what I said."
"I can sleep on the stairs."
"Come up to the terrace."
He followed me up the two flights without a word.
The glass door slid open on warm night air and the smell of the river.
The lights of the city lay below us, the same as the first night, when I had put his ring on a hand that shook.
I turned around.
"Don't say you're sorry," I said.
"I won't."
"Don't say anything tender."
"All right."
"I'm not forgiving you."
"I know."
"I want you anyway," I said. "Those are two separate things, and you don't get to mix them up."
