On Thursday at noon, we stood on the front steps of the Kane Tower and let them shout.
Sixty reporters packed the plaza behind a rope.
Denton wore charcoal, and I wore white, because Eleanor said white photographs like a dare.
He kept his hand on my back.
"Mrs. Kane!" someone called. "Are you Lizzie Flynn?"
"Yes," I said.
The shouting dropped a notch.
"You can check my signature at the bank, and you can check my blood at any hospital in this city."
"Is it true you lied about being a nurse?"
"I told the Guild nine years," I said. "I'm not going to repeat the number."
"What I can tell you is that a woman bled on a ballroom floor last Friday, and her baby is alive."
"Ask the doctor who treated her what he thought of my hands."
A reporter in the second row wrote that down.
"You've changed, Mrs. Kane," a man shouted. "Your ex-fiance says you're a different person."
"I am," I said.
I let it sit for a second, and the plaza went silent.
"For twenty-six years I was told to be quiet. Then I was called a thief in front of two hundred people who all watched."
