Chapter 16: Vote of Confidence

The board met at two o'clock in the same room where I had once slid a certificate down the table.

This time I came in without anyone's hand on my back.

Joaquin had asked to sit in the last row, and I had said yes.

He wore the canvas jacket over a white shirt, and the eleven directors looked at him, then looked away.

Lionel sat at the head in the chair that should have been mine.

His lawyer had a binder, and the binder was thick.

Noelle had not come.

I had told myself I did not expect her, and that was a lie.

"We will be brief," Lionel said. "The chief executive of this company contracted a husband to obtain her controlling shares."

"The man she hired is a competitor who intended to buy us."

"That is fraud against the trust, against this board and against every employee."

"I move a vote of no confidence."

"Seconded," said the lawyer.

"Discussion?" Lionel said, pleasantly.

I stood up.

My knees were not steady, so I put both palms flat on the table and stayed that way.
