Chapter 18: Noelle Pays

Adelaide chose Fontaine's for lunch on Tuesday, and she chose the table where I had once sat alone.

"I want to see this room with him in it," she said, and tapped her cane on the floor.

The tablecloths were the same, and the same two tables near the window were full.

Half the faces I recognized from the night a man in a canvas jacket knelt on the carpet.

Joaquin pulled out my grandmother's chair, then mine, and sat with his back to the wall.

He wore the jacket.

The room noticed.

A hush ran from table to table, and someone near the bar stood up quickly and then sat down again.

"They are all looking at you," Adelaide said, pleased.

"They are looking at the jacket," Joaquin said.

"Let them. It's cleaner than the one Lionel owns."

A waiter brought bread and did not meet anyone's eye.

We had barely ordered when the front door opened.

Noelle came in with a rolling suitcase and a plain envelope under her arm.

She wore the same trench coat as the day before, and she had not changed since.

She walked straight to our table.
