"Move," I said.
He moved.
I walked back to Tent 9 and crawled in beside Huck and told him every word.
"What do you want to do?" he said.
"Win," I said. "And then open my mouth."
"Even with night one."
"Even with night one." I found his hand. "I'm not ashamed of one thing I said in that tent, Denver. Let them hear it."
He pressed his mouth to my knuckles.
"Then I'll carry the heavy stuff," he said.
The race started at six, at the top of Mill Creek, in frost so thick the grass crunched.
Two drones hung over the start line, and a light on the production truck said LIVE in red letters.
The Spokane exes were stretching beside us.
"No hard feelings when we beat you," the ex-wife said.
"None," I said. "Watch that ankle on the switchbacks."
The horn went.
For eight miles the Exes were never more than a minute behind us.
At mile nine, the trail swings a mile out of its way to reach a footbridge.
I didn't take it.
I took the old stock ford my dad used to cross on horseback, knee-deep and slick.
