Chapter 6: Split Tents

I looked at his hand.

Two hundred and ten thousand dollars.

All of it, by tomorrow.

"Say it again," I said.

Kip smiled.

"I'll pay off the lodge. You give me the can."

"No. Say it again out there."

I walked past him down the trail.

He caught my elbow, and I pulled it free so hard he spilled his coffee for the first time in his life.

The whole camp was at the fire ring for dinner.

I walked into the middle of it and turned around.

"Kip has an offer," I said, loud enough for the production tent. "He'll pay my lodge's bank loan tonight, out of his own pocket. All I have to do is give him the box of cameras he sewed into your tents."

Kip had stopped at the edge of the firelight.

"That's not what I said," he said, in the deep voice.

"Two hundred and ten thousand," I said. "For a padlock key. Did I get the number wrong?"

Nobody spoke.

The Spokane ex-wife set down her spoon.

"He's buying his way out," she said. "He knows."

"No," I said to Kip. "Not for the lodge. Not for anything. Thanks for asking in front of everybody."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he smiled again, and it was worse than before.

"Big night tomorrow," he said. "Viewer vote."

The vote came at breakfast.

Kip read it off a tablet at the fire ring, with all ten families standing in the cold.

"America has spoken," he said. "Sixty-eight percent of viewers voted for a twist." He turned the tablet so the handhelds could see it. "The siblings sleep in separate tents. For their own good."

A production assistant was already carrying a spare one-person tent across camp.

She pitched it on the far side of the fire ring, forty feet from Tent 9, facing the other way.
