Chapter 16: Hallie's Turn
The room at the end of the upstairs hall had an iron bed, a sloped ceiling, and a brass key in the lock.
I turned it at nine that night.
Downstairs, forty people had gone home.
Skye had taken the room across the landing with a bottle of Gran's cherry brandy and a stack of board games.
I had told her to knock only if the house was on fire.
Benedict stood in the middle of the floor in his shirtsleeves.
His second tie was folded over my arm.
The first was already knotted loosely around his neck, with the long end hanging against his chest.
I took the end of it in my fist.
"Walk," I said.
I led him by it across the room to the foot of the bed.
It was a ridiculous, wonderful feeling.
He came where the silk pulled him, with his dark eyes fixed on my face, and he did not once look away.
"Stand there."
He stood.
"Unbutton your shirt."
His fingers moved to the first button.
"Slower."
He slowed.
I sat on the edge of the mattress with my legs crossed and watched him undo each one.
The skin of his chest came into the lamplight, the dark hair going gray, the long pale scar down his ribs.
He pulled the shirt off his shoulders and dropped it.
"Belt."
He undid it with a slow, deliberate pull.
"Trousers. Everything."
When he was bare, he stood with his hands loose at his sides.
The leash of silk lay across his chest, and he was hard.
I let myself look at him for a long time.
"You're blushing," he said.
"Shut up."
"You told me not to talk."
"I did." I stood up and walked a slow circle around him. "I haven't decided yet if you're allowed to."
