Chapter 17: The Dock

The dock at Saugatuck ran sixty feet out into the lake, and at midnight on Sunday it was ours.

There was no moon, only stars, and a lantern I had found in the boathouse and set on a post.

Gran's wool quilt lay spread across the boards.

Benedict stood at the end in his shirt and trousers, with his shoes off, looking down at the black water.

I had shown him Preston's text over breakfast.

He had asked me one question, whether I wanted him to stop it, and I had said Monday was mine.

I walked up behind him, wrapped in nothing but the other quilt, and put my arms around his waist.

"Tonight you're not allowed to think about it," I said.

"I wasn't."

"You were thinking about the page."

"I was thinking about the first time I came here. I was nine. My father threw me off this dock to teach me to swim."

"Did it work?"

"I hated him for a week and swam for forty years."

I laughed into his back.

He turned in my arms.

His face in the lantern light was lean and tired and entirely mine.

"Tonight," he said, "I'd like to be the one giving the orders."

"Because you asked nicely?"

"Because I'm asking."

I thought about it.

I let the quilt slide off my shoulders, and the cold October air hit my skin, and I shivered.

"Then give them," I said.

His eyes went dark.

"Take off my shirt."

I unbuttoned it and pushed it off him.

"Trousers."

I undid them and let them drop.
