Chapter 14: Camille's Tip

I called my grandfather from the middle of Spruce Street.

"The Haverford family has taken Suzette," I said. "Preston did it in front of my door."

"I know," Amos said. "Two of my men watched the van go."

"Then send the rest after it."

"No."

I stood there with the phone against my ear and the yellow page crushed in my fist.

"My men on Haverford ground is a war the families will see me start," Amos said.

"You wanted to be heir. Find her yourself."

He hung up.

I thought about who in this city had been inside Preston's life and was now outside it.

Suzette had said it herself, the night she paid for the hotel room.

She knows where Preston keeps things.

The hotel at the end of Walnut Street had a small café off the lobby.

Camille was sitting in it with one suitcase at her feet and a cup of tea gone cold.

She wore the same borrowed coat, and she looked up at me as if I were a verdict.

"The desk says you checked out yesterday," I said.

"My card didn't clear for a fourth night."
