Chapter 20: Desmond's Last Move
My grandfather's farm in Bucks County was an hour away, and we made it in forty minutes.
Suzette rode in the middle of the truck seat, with the oldest captain's car and two others close behind us.
The farmhouse door stood open.
Inside, the cellar door was open too, and the cellar was empty except for a mattress and a bucket.
A man lay on the floor beside the mattress, tied with his own belt, with a gag in his mouth.
He was about thirty, in a Haverford dock jacket, and one side of his face was swollen.
I took the gag out.
"Desmond took my keys," the man gasped. "I let him out for the money, and he hit me and locked me in."
"For what money?"
"Preston promised ten thousand to let him go."
"Desmond said the old man was giving the chair to a girl on Sunday, and he wouldn't let that happen."
"Where did he go?"
"The old man's house. He said he'd get his father to sign it over tonight."
