Chapter 12: Over
I did not argue.
I untied the broken strap from his wrist and folded it in my lap.
I put on my T-shirt, and my shorts, and my glasses, and I stood at the foot of his bed.
"Okay," I said.
"Sadie."
"You're right. I passed."
"I didn't mean it like that."
"How did you mean it?"
He sat up with his back to the headboard, and the sheet slid down to his hips.
He looked like a man who had been in a car wreck.
"Keeva's back in six days," he said.
"That's the end date, or near it. We both wrote it down."
"So?"
"So I'm not going to drag it out."
"You broke the strap with your bare hands," I said, and my voice cracked down the middle. "And now you're being careful?"
"It's not about the strap."
"Then what is it about?"
He looked at his hands.
They were big and scarred and gentle, and they were shaking.
"It's about the fact that I said 'home,'" he said. "In the storm. And I meant it. And I can't."
"Can't what?"
"I can't do that to Keeva."
He swallowed.
"And I can't do it to you. You're nineteen, Sadie. You have a whole life you haven't started."
