Chapter 14: Bunk Beds
"Not a sound," Ashton breathed against my ear. "Not one."
I lay on my back in the bottom bunk with his weight pressing me into a mattress that was older than I was.
The bunk room at the lake house has four beds and a window the size of a pizza box.
Dad had put Ashton in here "because he sleeps like a log."
Mom had put me in here because it was where I had always slept.
Nobody had asked either of us anything.
Keeva's door was twelve feet down the hall.
My parents were on the other side of one thin wall, and the whole house was made of pine boards that told on you.
Moonlight came through the window in a white square and lay across his bare shoulder.
"You came down here," he whispered. "I said no."
"You said it with your hand in my hair."
"Sadie."
"I'm not leaving."
"I know you're not."
He smiled, a crooked smile with the chipped tooth in it.
That smile did something to my stomach that no one should be able to do from a bunk bed.
I pulled him down by the back of the neck and he let me.
We kissed slow and deep and silent, his beard scraping my chin.
I had missed his mouth in four days.
He tasted of toothpaste and lake water.
His hand slid under the oversized T-shirt I wore.
I had nothing on under it.
He found that out and went still against my mouth.
"You walked down the hall like this."
"It's a long shirt."
"Jesus Christ, Sade."
"Shh."
I took his wrist and brought his hand up to my face.
I opened my mouth and drew two of his fingers inside.
His whole body jerked.
I sucked them slowly, down to the knuckle, and rolled my tongue between them, and looked him in the eye.
