Chapter 23: The Wedding of Two Lands
They married her again in the Hall of the High Kings.
Hild had unpacked the old wedding robe from a cedar chest in the vault, white wool stitched with gray wolves.
It fit as if it had been cut that morning.
She had cried the whole time she laced it.
"It was made for your mother," Hild said. "She never got to wear it."
Marit stood in the dark antechamber under the nine steps with the iron crown on her head and her mother's robe heavy on her shoulders.
Beyond the great carved doors, she could hear the Hall filling.
Boots on white stone.
A murmur like a river.
Lowmarch lords in velvet, Wildlands chiefs in furs, standing in the same room, three days after a war.
The doors swung open.
The pillars stood in their long rows, each one carved with a name, and every lantern was lit.
Down the center of the white floor ran a path of green cedar boughs.
At the end of it, at the foot of the dais, waited Torren.
