Chapter 13: The Folder
"No," I said.
Colin smiled at me from the back seat.
"Pam. It's cold, you're in a dress, and there's a driver waiting."
"I have a ride coming."
"You have a phone with eleven percent."
I looked down.
It was nine percent, and he knew that because he knew everything about my phone.
"I spent Monday on a ferry to Provincetown," he said.
"Did you enjoy the view?"
"I enjoyed finding a little black disc stuck under a rail. You're getting creative."
"Get away from my car, Colin."
"I'm not near your car." His voice stayed soft. "I'm near you."
Behind me, the Seaport Hotel doormen watched from under the awning.
One of them took a slow step forward.
A taxi swung into the lane with its roof light on.
I did not wait to see whether Colin's door was open or closed.
I ran three steps in my heels, pulled the taxi door, and fell in.
"Dorchester Avenue," I said. "Please go."
Colin put one hand flat on the glass of my window as we pulled away.
