Chapter 16: The Blanket
"Tell him I'm at my mother's," I said.
"I'm not telling him anything," Lorna said. "I'm asking you, politely, as a courtesy, to put the girl somewhere sensible."
"Sensible."
"She has a contract. She's signed things. She's overwrought. She'll say something she regrets."
"Goodbye, Lorna."

"I'm sorry I answered."
"No, it's good. Now we know he's out."
"You're staying here."
"Pamela, he knows where you live. He had a key."
"He had a key," I said, "and now I have a skillet, a new deadbolt, and a woman in 4C who has the police on speed dial."
Cassia looked at me for a moment.
Then she laughed, once, helplessly, and a spoonful of cereal went down the front of the pajamas.
