Chapter 14: Term Three
Cami's POV
I made it to the guest room before my hands started shaking.
I did not turn on the light.
He knocked once, and I knew his knock.
"Go away, Rocco."
"I have something you need to see."
I opened the door and did not step back.
He held out a small white box.
Inside were my sister's pearl earrings and a typed card.
I read it twice.
"Someone took these off the sink in my father's house," I said.
"Yes."
"While you stood on the porch with a cigarette you didn't smoke."
"Yes."
"You looked at her all night." My voice cracked, and I let it. "You sat at that table and watched her, and you didn't see a stranger in the hall."
"I know."
"You didn't see it last time either."
He went still.
"You stood at the bottom of those stairs for two years," I said. "She went cold and gray in front of you, and you looked at your phone. And you let a woman in that house carry her a tray every day."
"I did."
"You let her die, Rocco."
"I did," he said. "I have not said anything else to myself since the morning I woke up."
I wanted him to defend himself.
I wanted him to say it was not his fault, so I could hit him with the fact that it was.
He just stood in the corridor and took it.
"Term three," I said. "No lies. You kept this from me for four months."
"You told me your sister was safe," Rocco said. "You never told me you remembered. We both signed the same rule, Cami, and we both broke it on the first day."
