Chapter 17: The Lights Go Out

Bianca walked toward us with the pistol steady on Livia's head.

"Nobody move," she said. "Rocco, tell your men to put them down."

Rocco nodded once.

His three men lowered their guns to the concrete.

I still held the one I had taken, and Livia stood behind my shoulder, shaking against my back.

"Cami," Bianca said sweetly. "You too."

"How did you get out?"

"One of the elders' guards at the farmhouse has a daughter with a gambling debt. The Corsinis paid it off in a night." She smiled. "Everyone in this family has a price, and you were so busy being clever about the big ones."

"You're a dead woman," Rocco said.

"I've been dead since you took my key." Her voice cracked on it, and then it hardened. "I lived in your house for twenty years. I carried your father's coffin. I was going to be your wife."

"You were never going to be my wife."

"Because of her!"

The pistol jerked toward me, and I stepped to the side to cover Livia.

"Here's what happens," Bianca said, breathing hard. "Rocco kneels. Cami puts the gun down and kneels beside him. The little sister walks to the boat and gets in, and then I decide."

"No," Rocco said.

"Then I start with her."

The muzzle swung back to Livia.

I felt Livia's fingers dig into my arm.

"Cami," she whispered. "I'm so sorry."

"Don't you dare say that."

Rocco took one step forward.

"Bianca. Look at me."

"I am looking at you."

"Then look at me and put the gun on me. She never did anything to you."

"That's why it's going to hurt you," said Bianca.
