Chapter 21: The Commission Table

The Commission sat in the back room of a social club in Brooklyn, at a long table under a row of old photographs.

The three Ferrante elders sat at the head.

Beside them sat the heads of three allied families, who had flown in that morning and did not look pleased about it.

Rocco walked me in on his arm.

My side still pulled when I breathed, and I had worn a black suit and flat shoes and told nobody it hurt.

Elliot came behind us with a tablet under his arm, because I had asked him to.

Bianca was already in the room.

She sat alone on a chair in the middle of the floor in a white dress, with her hair brushed and her hands folded.

Beside her stood a gray little man in a gray suit who said he was the Corsini family's lawyer.

"The truce flag covers her," the lawyer said. "She is a witness and she is free to speak."

"Speak," said the oldest elder, and tapped his silver wolf's-head cane on the floor.

Bianca lifted her face.

There were tears on it already.

"I'm so afraid," she said. "I have come here because the truth must be told, and I am the only one left in the house who loves this family."

"Get on with it," said the second elder, the one with the long beard.

"Mrs. Ferrante shot an old man in the wrist." Bianca's voice shook beautifully. "She took a gun into a peace meeting, with a Ferrante army behind her, and fired the first shot. I was only there to beg them to stop."

A murmur ran around the table.

One of the allied heads frowned at me.

"Is this true, Mrs. Ferrante?"

I stood up.

It hurt, and I stood straight anyway.

"I'd like the Commission to watch one thing," I said. "Elliot."

He stepped forward and laid the tablet on the table.
