Chapter 23: In a Church

St. Brigid's had stood on the corner of my parents' street for eighty years, and I had been baptized in it.

At ten that Saturday morning I stood in its cloakroom in a white dress with my hair pinned up, and my mother knelt at my feet pinning the hem.

She had said nothing about the wedding since I came through the door.

"Mama," I said.

"Hold still."

"Mama, say something."

"I have said a great deal in this life already." She stuck in a pin. "At the airport, I pointed a finger at you and swore on my own mother's grave."

"I remember."

"I said you would regret it."

"I remember that too."

She sat back on her heels, and her eyes were wet.

"I was wrong," my mother said. "Do not tell your father I said so."

I started to laugh, and then I was crying, and she grabbed a tissue and dabbed under my eyes while telling me that if I ruined my mascara she would never forgive me.

Livia came in with a bunch of white roses.

She wore a blue dress, and she was glowing, and I looked at her for a long moment.

"What?" she said.

"Nothing. You look warm."

"I am warm," Livia said, and put her arms around me. "I haven't dreamed about the staircase once this week."

"Good."

"Last night I dreamed it was empty, and the lights were on." She stepped back. "Your husband was at the top, holding a glass of soda, waiting for you."

I did not trust my voice.

She kissed my cheek.

"Go and marry him, Cami. He's been standing at the altar for an hour, and he's wearing the wrong tie."

"What's wrong with it?"

"He bought it himself."

My father was waiting in the vestibule with his cane and a stiff gray suit.
