Chapter 18: The Heads of the Families
On Friday the street outside the club was lined with black cars from three states.
I counted five before we parked.
Each one had come with two men and no flags, as the rules said, and each pair stood on the sidewalk under the green awning with their hands in sight.
Cesare took my hand in the back seat.
"You say only what we planned," he said.
"I know."
"If it goes bad, you look at Vito. He gets you out."
"It won't go bad."
"Elisa."
"I know where the door is, Cesare."
He kissed my knuckles once, without looking at me.
Then he got out and came around and opened my door.
The back room of the club had been cleared of card tables.
One long table stood under the crucifix, with a green cloth and five heavy chairs on the far side.
The heads of the families sat in them.
I knew their faces from weddings and funerals.
A bald old man from South Jersey, who had buried two sons, rested both hands on a cane.
Beside him sat a woman, which surprised me, silver-haired and sharp-eyed, who ran the Delaware County docks since her husband's heart gave out.
