Chapter 22: Second Will
The estate lawyer was at a table near the stage, in the dinner jacket of a man who attended every Founders' Ball.
He had been sitting with his napkin crushed in his fist since the first recording began.
I carried the prints down the steps to him.
"Please," I said. "Read it. Out loud."
He took the pages and held the first one under the light of the chandelier.
His lips moved, and his face changed, and then he took off his glasses and put them on again.
"That is Mr. Habersham's signature," he said, almost to himself. "I'd know it anywhere."
"Read it," said a voice from the floor, and then another, and then the ballroom was saying it, three hundred people at once.
The lawyer climbed the steps to the stage, which was the one thing I had not expected.
Delilah stood at the edge of the boards with her arms wrapped around herself.
He did not look at her.
He cleared his throat into the microphone, and the sound filled the hall.
"This is a photograph of a will dated six weeks before Mr. Habersham's death," he said.
