Chapter 22: The Break Room Wedding
The ring inside the box was a plain gold band with a small green stone.
"It's the color of your eyes," Glenn said. "Mostly. They go more brown when you're angry."
"They do not."
"They did in the elevator."
Six hundred people were holding their breath, and I could hear a fork fall somewhere.
I looked at the ring.
I looked at the man on one knee, in a tuxedo, on a stage, in front of his whole company.
"Yes," I said.
The ballroom came apart with noise.
I put up one hand, and the drivers at the back actually quieted.
"But not here," I said into the microphone, and then I looked at Glenn. "I want to marry you where it started."
He understood before I finished.
"The break room," he said.
"The crew works until two."
He stood, took the ring out of its box, and slid it on my finger.
It fit.
At twelve-forty in the morning, the sixth floor of Wexler Freight was lit by exit signs.
