Chapter 10: The Assault Report

Margot came back to the hospital in the back of an ambulance, with my sister's hand on her wrist.

By Saturday morning she was stable again, in a room on the fourth floor with a new drip and a thin oxygen tube.

I had spent the night in the same plastic chair.

At nine the doctor came in and said her numbers had steadied.

"Not good," he said. "Steady. If they hold through tomorrow, she can go back to your sister's."

"I'm not staying here," Margot said from the pillow.

"You will if I say so."

"Then say it nicely."

He looked at me with something close to a smile, and went out.

I thought that was the best news of the day.

At ten o'clock, two police officers came down the hallway with their hats under their arms.

They stopped at the nurses' station, and the older one checked a card.

"Nolan Treharne?"

I stood up.

He cleared his throat. "Mr. Treharne, we have a report of assault filed by a Brody Keene on Monday evening. We'd like you to come down to the station and answer some questions."

Millie came out of the vending alcove with a coffee in each hand.

"He didn't assault anybody," she said.

"Ma'am, I'm not saying he did. I'm saying there's a report."

"I was standing right there."

"Then we'll want you too."

I put my hands where they could see them.

The younger one looked at the floor, and I knew I was about to be walked out in front of every patient on the ward.

"Officers," said a voice from the room behind me.

Margot sat up against the pillow with the oxygen tube hooked around her ear.

"I'd like to give a statement," she said. "Right now."

"Ma'am, you're a patient."

"I'm also a witness. I arrived at the end of the incident. And I have a lawyer."

The lawyer came around the corner as she said it.
