Chapter 13: Quad Rules
The chair did not blink at "Take it."
He lifted two fingers, and a man in a grey suit came down the walk with a leather folder.
"Your card, Rhys," the chair said. "Your car keys. The key to the suite."
"The suite belongs to the Montgomery endowment. You have until dark to clear it."
Rhys took out his wallet and set a black card on the folder.
He put the car keys beside it.
Then he worked the little copper half-penny off his key ring with his thumbnail, slid it into his shirt pocket, and handed over the rest.
His father watched this with mild interest.
"Sit with your friends, then," the chair said. "See how long they last."
He walked back to his car, and Delaney's father went with him, still looking pleased.
Delaney stayed one second longer.
She smiled at me, small and sharp, and followed.
The crowd broke into a hundred low arguments.
Rhys came up the steps past me without a word, and his shoulder didn't touch mine.
