Chapter 24: The Founders' Ball
The Founders' Ball was two weeks later, and the Commons didn't look like the Commons at all.
Somebody had hung a thousand paper herons from the rafters on fishing line.
They turned slowly in the warm light from the long windows, blue and white.
A string quartet played in the corner, and the tables had been pushed against the walls.
I stood at the top of the stairs for a full minute before I went down.
I wore a plain dark-blue dress that Lane had found at a shop in town.
My mother's navy blazer went over it, with the sleeves rolled.
Nobody had told me to leave the blazer behind, and I wouldn't have listened if they had.
Around my neck hung a thin silver chain.
On it, side by side, two halves of a copper penny made one heron with its wing out.
The room saw me.
It went quiet from the stairs outward, a ripple of turning heads.
A girl who had asked me for homework help said, "Oh, Mindy," and put her hand over her mouth.
